CFREE Tip #4 Does Your Solar Array Produce More Electricity than You Use?

Eversource allows transfers of any excess dollar credits that are generated from residential solar each month to other account holders. While some people keep the credits that they generated in the summer months for use in the winter, some arrays are large enough that they will generate excess credits over a full year of usage. There is a program that Eversource and other utilities have in Massachusetts that allows these credits to be transferred from the generating account to other Eversource accounts. The program is called “Schedule Z”.
Recent legislation has required Eversource to expand upon this, now allowing the transfers not just within the eastern Massachusetts "load zone," but also to their western Massachusetts load zone customers, and soon that will expand to also allow transfers to customers of other utilities. There is now an online portal to initiate the transfers and make changes at any time. An unlimited number of transfers are allowed per year with the portal and they become effective within 24 business hours of being submitted.
The portal is in its first version now and only recently went online. It is not perfect, but Eversource has been very responsive and has already made changes based upon feedback from a member of CFREE. This shows their commitment to advancing this program, as well as cutting their costs to manage schedule Z.

CFREE (Carbon Free Residential – Everything Electric) is a subcommittee of the Lincoln Green Energy Committee (GEC). CFREE provides guidance on how households can reduce use of fossil fuels and decrease greenhouse gas emissions to help Massachusetts meet statewide emissions limits set for 2030, 2040, and 2050. It also provides information about state and federal incentives that help reduce the cost of such changes. For more information and other CFREE Tips visit: lincolngreenenergy.org.
